2D vs 3D Panel Fence: Differences and Which One to Choose

2D and 3D panel fences compared: how each panel is built, wire diameters, V-folds, sizes, coating, typical uses, and which one suits gardens, schools and facilities.

Product guides and technical content 5 min read

A 3D panel fence is a single layer of 4 mm welded wire with horizontal V-folds that stiffen it. A 2D panel fence is flat, with pairs of 6 mm horizontal wires and 5 mm vertical wires (6/5/6). Both are 250 cm wide, come in 100 to 200 cm heights and are hot-dip galvanized and powder coated. 3D panels suit gardens and housing; 2D panels suit schools, sports grounds and public sites.

A 3D panel fence is a single layer of welded wire with horizontal V-folds that make it stiff. A 2D panel fence is flat: each horizontal row has two wires with the vertical wires between them, and the wire is thicker. 3D panels suit gardens and housing, 2D panels suit schools and sports grounds, and both are used around factories.

Where each panel gets its stiffness

The 3D panel uses a single layer of 4 mm wire. Its horizontal V-folds work like ribs along the panel and give it its stiffness, and the number of folds goes from 2 to 4 depending on the panel height.

The 2D panel has no folds. Its stiffness comes from the doubled 6 mm horizontal wires, with 5 mm vertical wires welded between each pair. The thicker, doubled wires make a 2D panel more rigid than a 3D panel.

How they look on site

A 3D fence shows a horizontal line at each fold, which breaks up a long run and reads well in a garden. A 2D fence is a flat, even grid with no folds, and the doubled horizontal wires give it a heavier look along school yards, sports grounds and public buildings.

Security, privacy and wind

Neither panel is a high-security fence on its own. Mesh size, wire diameter, posts and fixings all affect how hard a fence is to climb or cut; our article on panel fence mesh size and security explains how. For a higher barrier, razor wire can be added along the top line where local rules allow it.

For privacy, both panels can carry a grass fence on the inside face, and a PP fence privacy strip can be woven into the panel mesh. The strip is 19 cm wide, comes in 26 m rolls in RAL 7016 or RAL 6005, and the clips for its ends are included.

Covering a panel turns an open grid into a closed surface, so choose the post section and its concrete footing for the screen, not only for the panel.

Which one to choose

  • Home or villa garden, residential complex: 3D panel. For a front garden that keeps the view open, the 120x250 cm panel; for side and back gardens shared with a neighbour, the 150x250 cm panel.
  • School yard, sports ground, park or public building: 2D panel.
  • High boundary around a factory or warehouse: the 200x250 cm panel.
  • Sloping ground, line ends and non-standard heights: custom size panel fence.
  • Construction sites and events: portable mobile fence, which stands on bases without being buried.

On price, ask for quotes for both panel types on the same run length and height, so the comparison covers the same work.

Posts, gates and fixings

Both panel types use the same panel fence post: a 50x50 mm box section with a 1.5 mm wall, oven-baked paint and a plastic top cap. Posts are set 250 cm apart, and the panels attach to them with clamps. On soil, an in-ground post is set in concrete; on concrete or a wall top, a flanged post is fixed with anchors. Post lengths are 100, 120, 150, 200 and 240 cm.

A panel fence gate uses the same welded panel as infill. The pedestrian gate is 100 cm wide, in the same heights and colours as the fence, and sliding and swing gates are made to order.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 3D panel fence the same as a V mesh fence?

Yes. Both names describe welded wire panels with horizontal V-folds. Our 3D panels use 4 mm wire with a 50x150 mm mesh.

What is a double wire fence?

It is another name for a 2D panel fence: each horizontal row has two wires, with the vertical wires welded between them. Our 2D panels use 6/5/6 mm wire.

Which colours are 2D and 3D panels available in?

RAL 7016 anthracite gray and RAL 6005 green are in stock, and posts and gates come in the same colours.

Can I add a grass fence to a 2D or 3D panel?

Yes. The grass fence is tied to the inside face of the panel with cable ties or galvanized wire. Check the posts first, because the covered fence takes more wind.
