On a panel fence, the mesh is the opening between horizontal and vertical wires and directly affects how hard the fence is to climb. Our 3D panels use a 50x150 mm mesh and 4 mm wire; 2D panels have double horizontal wires (6/5/6 mm) and are more rigid; the 358 type's narrow 76.2x12.7 mm mesh keeps fingers and toes out. A narrow mesh reduces visibility and airflow.
On a panel fence, the smaller the mesh, the fewer hand and foot holds there are, making the fence harder to climb and harder to attack with cutting tools. Our 3D panels have a 50x150 mm mesh; where high security is needed, such as prisons and energy facilities, the 358 type with a narrow 76.2x12.7 mm mesh is used. As the mesh gets smaller, visibility and airflow also decrease and cost increases.
What is mesh size?
Mesh size is the measurement of the opening between the horizontal and vertical wires of a panel, written in millimeters: "50x150 mm" means 50 mm between vertical wires and 150 mm between horizontal wires. Mesh size alone does not determine security; wire diameter, panel type, posts and fixings are assessed together.
Mesh size by panel type
| Panel | Mesh size | Wire | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3D panel (our products) | 50x150 mm | 4 mm | Homes, residential complexes, gardens, facility perimeters |
| 2D panel (our products) | Double horizontal wires | 6/5/6 mm | Schools, sports areas, parks, factories |
| 358 type narrow-mesh panel | 76.2x12.7 mm | 4 mm | Facilities requiring high security |
Pages for these types on our site: 3D Panel Fence, 200x250 cm Panel Fence and 2D Panel Fence System. The 358 type narrow-mesh panel is not in our product range.
How does mesh size affect security?
Climbing: With a wide mesh, toes and fingers fit between the wires; with the narrow 358 type mesh, there is no such gap.
Cutting: With a narrow mesh, the jaws of a cutting tool have trouble gripping the wire, and more wires must be cut to make the same opening.
Visibility: A narrow mesh reduces the view from outside; it can also make it harder for a security camera to see beyond the fence.
Wind: As the mesh gets smaller, the surface closes up and more wind load is carried by the posts.
2D or 3D?
A 3D panel gets its stiffness from horizontal V-bends and uses a single layer of wire; it is light and economical. A 2D panel has no bends; each horizontal row has two wires, with the vertical wire welded between them. Because its wires are thicker, a 2D panel is more rigid and is preferred for schools, sports areas and long facility runs.
Which suits which area?
Homes and residential complexes: 3D panel, 50x150 mm mesh
Schools, sports areas, factories: 2D panel
Energy facilities, warehouses, high security: 358 type narrow mesh; if needed, razor wire on posts with top arms (checking local rules)
Coastal and humid areas: Ask separately about coating thickness and the galvanizing method; on our panels the wire is hot-dip galvanized during production and the powder coating is 60–110 microns

Frequently asked questions
Why does mesh size matter on a panel fence?
Mesh size affects how hard the fence is to climb and cut, how much you can see through it, and its wind load.
What is the most secure panel fence mesh size?
Among common panels, the narrowest mesh is the 76.2x12.7 mm of the 358 type high-security panel; fingers and toes cannot fit between the wires.
What mesh size do your panels have?
Our 3D panels have a 50x150 mm mesh and 4 mm wire.
Does a narrow mesh increase cost?
Yes. Because more wire is used over the same area, narrow-mesh panels are more expensive.
Which is stronger, a 2D panel or a 3D panel?
A 2D panel is more rigid thanks to its double horizontal and thicker wires; a 3D panel is lighter and more economical.
Does a narrow mesh affect camera visibility?
It can. If the camera needs to see beyond the fence, plan the angle and mesh size together.
