Basketball court construction in brief
To build a basketball court, we prepare the base, apply the sports surface coating, mark the lines, set up the hoops and install the perimeter fence and lighting. For those who want to use an outdoor court in winter and rain too, we cover the court with a Basketball Court Tent.

Which surface for which court?
On outdoor basketball courts, the surface is usually a coating applied over a concrete or asphalt base. Who will use the court, and how often, decides the coating.
| Surface | How it is applied | Where it is common |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic coating | Sports paint applied layer by layer over a concrete or asphalt base. | School, residential complex and park courts |
| Polyurethane coating | An elastic layer poured over the base that feels softer underfoot. | Club and municipal courts |
| Artificial grass | Line-marked turf on multi-purpose courts where basketball is also played. | Multi-purpose courts |
How is a basketball court built? Step by step
Site survey and measurement
The area is measured to see whether it fits the official dimensions and how much clearance will remain around the court.
Base
On an outdoor court, the concrete or asphalt base is prepared with a slight slope that drains rainwater to the edges.
Surface coating
The chosen acrylic or polyurethane system is applied in layers.
Lines and hoops
The court lines are marked and the hoops are fixed in place.
Fence and lighting
The perimeter fence and its gate are installed and the lighting is connected. For an indoor court, the tent is set up before this stage.
Planning the dimensions
Official dimensions
Under FIBA rules the playing court is 28 m long and 15 m wide; the ring is 3.05 m above the floor.
School and residential courts
If the area is too small for the official dimensions, the court is scaled down to fit. If official matches will be played, the federation dimensions apply.
Clearance around the court
A clearance is left outside the lines to keep players from hitting the fence or wall; this clearance sets the fence line.
Indoor court
In a court tent, the interior height and the space behind the hoops are planned for the game.
