How is a padel court different from a tennis court?

Padel is a racket sport played in doubles in which the walls are part of the game. The court is smaller than a tennis court and enclosed on all four sides; the ball stays in play after it bounces off a wall. That is why the wall system matters as much as the surface when the court is built.

Size

Under FIP rules the court measures 20 m long and 10 m wide on the inside; the tolerance is 0.5%.

Walls

The back walls and part of the side walls are glass; the rest is closed with wire mesh. The ball stays in play by bouncing off these surfaces.

Height

FIP requires at least 6 m of unobstructed height over every point of the court and recommends 8 m for new facilities. On an indoor court the roof and lighting are positioned accordingly.

Surface

Short-pile artificial grass is laid with sand infill. How evenly the sand is spread affects the ball bounce and the players' footing.

How is a padel court built? Step by step

  1. Site survey and measurement

The site and the outdoor or indoor installation location are measured; for an indoor court the clear height is checked.

  2. Base

A level concrete base is prepared, with a fall suitable for drainage on outdoor courts.

  3. Wall system

The frame that carries the glass and mesh walls is fixed to the base, then the glass and mesh panels are fitted.

  4. Artificial grass and sand

The padel grass is laid, the lines are inlaid and the sand infill is spread.

  5. Net and lighting

The net and its posts are installed and the lighting is connected.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of a padel court?
Under FIP rules a padel court measures 20 m × 10 m on the inside, with a tolerance of 0.5%.
How high should the roof be for an indoor padel court?
FIP requires at least 6 m of unobstructed height over every point of the court and recommends 8 m for new facilities. Lighting and roof elements must not hang below this height.
What surface is used on a padel court?
Short-pile artificial grass laid with sand infill. We use Padeles Curly Artificial Grass, which has a pile height of 13 mm.
Why are padel court walls made of glass?
The ball stays in play by bouncing off the walls; glass provides this bounce and also lets spectators see the game. The rest of the wall is closed with wire mesh.
Can a padel court be built on an existing site?
Yes, if the site can fit FIP's 20 × 10 m court and the space around it, and the base is sound.
