A pool fence has two jobs: keeping unsupervised children and visitors away from the water, and screening the pool from view. A rigid panel fence with a self-closing gate handles access; a grass fence screen added on top provides privacy.
A good pool fence does two things: it stops children, pets and uninvited visitors from reaching the water unsupervised, and it keeps the pool area from being seen from the street or by neighbours. The usual way to get both is a rigid metal fence with a lockable, self-closing gate for safety, with a privacy screen such as grass fence attached to it.

Start with safety: what the barrier must do
Many countries and municipalities have specific rules for residential pool barriers, covering things such as minimum fence height, gate type and gaps. Check the local rules before choosing a design, because they decide the minimum, not the style you prefer.
Whatever the local rule says, a pool barrier works best when:
- it surrounds the pool completely, with no gap at a house wall, hedge or shed;
- the gate closes and latches by itself, and the latch is out of a small child's reach;
- there are no horizontal rails, planters or furniture next to it that a child could use as a step;
- the gap under the fence is small enough that nobody can crawl through.
Fence types used around pools
Grass fence, panel fence, wire fence and wooden fence are the most common choices around pool gardens. Each solves a different part of the problem.
| Fence type | Main strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Panel fence | Rigid welded steel panels on fixed posts; a solid barrier with a gate option | See-through on its own |
| Grass fence | Privacy and a green look; blocks views into the pool area | Needs a supporting fence; it is a screen, not a barrier |
| Wire fence | Simple way to mark a boundary on larger plots | Less rigid; easier to climb or push through |
| Wooden fence | Natural look | Wood near pool water and sun needs regular treatment |
Panel fence for the secure barrier
A panel fence is made of welded steel wire panels fixed to posts. Galvanizing protects the steel from corrosion, and a PVC or powder coating adds a second protective layer and a colour, which matters near pool water and splashing. A matching panel fence gate can be fitted with a lock, so the gate does not become the weak point.
Grass fence for privacy
A grass fence is made from artificial grass strips or rolls mounted onto an existing fence. Around a pool it is used to block views from outside while keeping a green, garden-like look. Because it needs something to hang on, it is normally installed on a panel fence or wire fence; the details of fitting it are explained in our guide to grass fence systems on panel fences.

Design ideas that work around pools
- Panel fence plus grass fence: the panel gives the barrier, the grass screen gives privacy. Grass fence covering the mesh also leaves fewer openings to use as footholds.
- Privacy only where it is needed: screen the sides facing the street or neighbours and leave the side facing your house open, so the pool stays visible from indoors.
- Colour matched to the garden: green or anthracite panels blend with planting; a grass screen in a darker shade can look calmer next to a pool.
- Clear zone around the fence: keep sun loungers, pots and pool equipment away from the outside of the fence so they cannot be used to climb over.
Before you order
- Measure the full perimeter, including the parts that run along buildings.
- Decide the height after checking local pool barrier rules.
- Note the ground: paving, soil, or a mix, because it affects how posts are fixed.
- Mark where the gate goes and which way it should open.
- Decide which sides need privacy screening.
