The shell of a mushroom growing room
A mushroom growing tent is the outer shell of the enclosed room where mushrooms are grown. It consists of a galvanized steel frame, a double tarpaulin with an insulation layer and closed side walls. The tent's job is to separate the interior from outside temperature changes and daylight. The dark-colored tarpaulin option keeps daylight out.
The humidity, temperature and air that mushrooms need do not come from the tent itself. They are provided by humidifiers, heaters or coolers and ventilation fans, and the values vary by mushroom type and growth stage. Oyster mushrooms and button mushrooms do not need the same conditions. Before choosing equipment, consult an agricultural engineer or, in Türkiye, the provincial directorate of agriculture and forestry.
Options for the Mushroom Growing Tent
- Insulation: Option for an insulation layer between the two tarpaulin layers.
- Closed side walls: Plan entry through a single door. If you put an anteroom in front of the door, the inside air does not mix directly with the outside when the door is opened.
- Shelf layout: The size is set by the rows of shelves and the aisles between them.
- Equipment openings: Openings in the tarpaulin are planned for fans, humidifiers and the electrical line.
When planning
First decide the number of shelves and the shelf height, then draw where the equipment will go; the size of the tent follows from these two plans. Make the floor washable and leave a drain for water. In mushroom growing, cleanliness is the first step in preventing disease.
For a mushroom growing tent set up outside a village settlement area, Article 27 of Zoning Law No. 3194 in Türkiye requires a building permit; consult your municipality or provincial special administration.
